(Military) Logic Question

with 2 comments

A  Major is a higher rank than Lieutenant but a Major General (2 starts) is lower than Lieutenant General (3 stars).  What’s the logic?

  1. Sharon,
Well there is an answer to this question and it is not logic.
it is an anomaly going back to 1855 and related to the fact that George Washington died as Lieutenant General and not a Full general. so it was not honorble to give a higher rank then Washington’s.
You see, There are nations where honor still counts.

  2. @Raz,
I thought that Washington passed away before 1855…
Do you have any reference to support what you wrote (which makes sense BTW)
